While the views I get skiing up at Sunshine are pretty good, the views we got on an overnight trip to Lake O'Hara and the Elizabeth Parker hut in Yoho National Park were outstanding. The first time I've filled a memory card in a single day... |
...not bad going seeing as it was a winter solstice trip. These first two are shots of the ski in. In the summer Parks Canada run just two buses per day along this track, or you can hike in. The hut is booked solid in the summer almost as soon as reservations are available. |
This shot is from the edge of the lake looking towards the East. I think if you head over the main peaks you would end up in the Lake Louise area and back in Banff National Park. |
After around four hours skiing it was great to spy the huts and even better see the fire already on. |
Great views from every angle. This is looking back in the direction of the lake. The main peak on the left of the picture is Mount Victoria (I think!). |
No rest for the wicked. Stuart demonstrating our water source. With plenty of fresh snow from last weekend we didn't need to go far to fill the buckets and I guess the odd pine needle in your tea is ok. |
Not your usual hut/refuge fayre. Oh yes, we dragged a turkey and all the trimmings in. There were ten of us in the group - organised by the "Living Room". A great organisation that aims to offer the young seasonaires something else to do besides drinking. They have a year round programme that includes a whole range of mountain activities. |
Guess who scored the most sought after secret santa gift? With swapping/stealing allowed that bottle of beer pretty much did the rounds before the end of the game. |
Stuart may have got the beer - but I was happy enough to get the champagne minature. |
After a great night's sleep we woke up to this. |
You can see how snug we were in the hut - look at that steam! Mind you, it could be from the fried breakfast on the go - a fry up in the back country, now thats style. |
Four Canadians, five Aussies and a token Brit. The poor guy who took this ended up with ten cameras round his neck. |
Just stunning. Didn't matter which way you turned. No suprise that the area has been popular for over a century. |

Just a "hardcore" few made it for a short morning tour before heading back out. |
Pear shaped. Extreme cross country skiing I guess. |
