Thanks to Karl for this great shot.
Looking down from the Oberaarjoch just before turning back and retracing some of our steps from the day before.
With a long day ahead we were away by 6.30.
After a quick trundle along the Galmigletscher we needed to negotiate some crevasses and seracs near to where it joins the Fieschergletscher.
Quite good fun early in the day...
Karl actually took this the day before - we certainly weren't in the sunlight at this point. Again, you can pretty much see our whole ascent, with the Gross-Wannenhorn at the top right of shot.
Looking back across the Fieschergletscher and then up the Galmigletscher - the Vord-Galmihorn is the peak with the snowy saddle just right of centre.
You can see the seracs and crevasses we negotiated right in the centre of shot - the hut is way off round to photo left obscured behind the Finsteraarrothorn. |
Karl approaching the final stage of the skin...
...but before that we headed to the left side of the summit.
Great view looking back - the scenery was fantastic right from the beginning to the end of the trip.
Like this.
Again, looking towards the Matterhorn. |
Looking back down onto the Konkordiaplatz. |
Looking, well, down. Another example of a skiable climb not being quite so on the other side.
Karl heads to the other end of the Gross-Wannenhorn. He's just about over the most exposed part - a slip to his right and I would imagine it would be game over. |
I actually made it a bit further and touched the rock and stopped to...
...take this shot - amazed the camera was steady. Like I said, a slip here... |
Looking back towards the left hand side. |
Nice to not be last up - in fact there were still people just starting the main climb as we dropped back onto the Fieschergletscher. Quite late in the day to be heading up. |
A little bird at the Konkordia hut had told us that there might still be a little powder on the most northerly facing aspect of the descent.
Although well skied, it was worth a look. |
Not bad considering it was around three weeks since the last snow and given the recent temperatures. |
Hope I'd been standing far enough back when I took the shot looking down! There were certainly a couple of tracks nearer the edge than mine.
I'd like to say job done, but first we had to skin back up to the Grunhornelucke, down the other side and climb those lovely ladders one last time. We did have some great spring snow coming down from the Grunhornelucke to the Konkordiaplatz - a fair compensation. |
